Most individual health insurance offer a maternity rider you
can purchase with your policy. Without this rider, most
individual insurance companies will not cover maternity.
Newborns and adopted children are automatically included under
a parent’s individual insurance policy for the first 31
days as long as the policy already allows coverage for
dependents. The insurer might require that the parent enroll
the baby or adopted child within the 31 days from birth in
order to continue coverage after 31 days. Handicapped
dependents are allowed coverage under a parentᡃs
individual health plan with no age restrictions. The child must
not be able to support him/herself because of a mental handicap
or physical disability and must rely on parents for support.
Remember that premiums are driven by the cost of medical
care in the geographic area in which you live. Generally if you
purchase a policy that costs less in monthly premium, you will
usually end up paying a greater share of the medical expenses
when you are sick or hurt.
Nevada requires all health insurance plans to provide

Contraceptives, Dental Anesthesia, Diabetes Self Management,
Diabetes Supplies, Drug Abuse Treatment, Emergency Services,
Home Health Care, Hospice Care, HPV Vaccine, Mammogram,
Maternity Stay, Mental Health General, Mental Health Parity
Laws, Off-Label Drug Use, PKU/Formula, Prostate Cancer
Screening, TMJ Disorders.
Applying for health insurance requires filling out an
application which includes questions about your past health
conditions and treatments, in most cases. The insurance company
uses this information to determine whether to approve you for
coverage. Do not try to hide information about your health
condition, as it can be reason to retroactively terminate your
coverage. This would leave you responsible for all of your
expenses from that time forward, less any premiums paid. Nevada
insurers are required to offer you two standardized policies.
You may select either the basic or standard plan. If for some
reason you lose coverage under a group plan in Nevada and meet
set requirements, you are guaranteed the right to buy a
conversion policy. A conversion policy is an individual policy
sold by the insurance company that covered your former group.
You will not have a new preexisting condition exclusion period
for your conversion policy.
