All individual plans represented here are considered major medical insurance policies since the insurance company assumes essentially all the risk after you pay a deductible and your percentage of shared expenses, called coinsurance.

Individual plans in Nevada are available in several designs and deductibles. This allows you to choose options to keep your medical insurance plan affordable. The number of choices featured allows you to select plans to keep your cost low as a trade-off for other benefits. Nevada health insurance laws state that your current health insurance policy is guaranteed renewable as long as information stated on application is not false and have paid your premiums on time. If you decide to switch health insurance companies, there is no guarantee the pre-existing condition exclusion will be waived. If you have an preexisting condition the company may have an exclusion rider put on your policy or they may have unlimited exclusion periods.

If you have had continuous coverage, are HIPAA eligible, and are changing health insurance plans, your old policy’s exclusion period credits your new policy’s required exclusion period. Companies that sell individual medical insurance plans in NV are allowed to turn you down because of health or other factors. Please make sure you understand where you stand with the insurance company on pre–existing conditions during the first 10–day free review period after receiving the policy, if not before.

Most individual health insurance offer a maternity rider you can purchase with your policy. Without this rider, most individual insurance companies will not cover maternity. Newborns and adopted children are automatically included under a parent’s individual insurance policy for the first 31 days as long as the policy already allows coverage for dependents. The insurer might require that the parent enroll the baby or adopted child within the 31 days from birth in order to continue coverage after 31 days. Handicapped dependents are allowed coverage under a parentᡃs individual health plan with no age restrictions. The child must not be able to support him/herself because of a mental handicap or physical disability and must rely on parents for support.

Remember that premiums are driven by the cost of medical care in the geographic area in which you live. Generally if you purchase a policy that costs less in monthly premium, you will usually end up paying a greater share of the medical expenses when you are sick or hurt.

Nevada requires all health insurance plans to provide coverage for several medical services including: Alcoholism, Ambulance Services, Breast Reconstruction, Cervical cancer/HPV Screening, Clinical Trials, Colorectal Cancer Screening, Contraceptives, Dental Anesthesia, Diabetes Self Management, Diabetes Supplies, Drug Abuse Treatment, Emergency Services, Home Health Care, Hospice Care, HPV Vaccine, Mammogram, Maternity Stay, Mental Health General, Mental Health Parity Laws, Off-Label Drug Use, PKU/Formula, Prostate Cancer Screening, TMJ Disorders.

Applying for health insurance requires filling out an application which includes questions about your past health conditions and treatments, in most cases. The insurance company uses this information to determine whether to approve you for coverage. Do not try to hide information about your health condition, as it can be reason to retroactively terminate your coverage. This would leave you responsible for all of your expenses from that time forward, less any premiums paid. Nevada insurers are required to offer you two standardized policies. You may select either the basic or standard plan. If for some reason you lose coverage under a group plan in Nevada and meet set requirements, you are guaranteed the right to buy a conversion policy. A conversion policy is an individual policy sold by the insurance company that covered your former group. You will not have a new preexisting condition exclusion period for your conversion policy.
