A Word About Health Insurance Costs

Individual health insurance in Idaho is also referred to as individual health care, personal health insurance, personal medical insurance, private health insurance, comprehensive health coverage, major medical insurance, and family insurance. Family insurance is simply an individual policy with more than one insured member of the family included in the application and coverage. Health Savings Accounts (HSA) are available for.

Individual healthcare policies can also be used for self–employed individuals in ID. You would still be considered as covered for business purposes and your premium would normally be a deductible business expense on your income tax return. Always check with your accountant on tax issues.

Individual Idaho Health Insurance plans are available is several designs and deductibles allowing you to choose options to keep your plan affordable. While not low cost, the number of choices allows you to select plans to keep your cost low as a trade-off for other benefits. Remember that premiums are driven by the cost of medical care in the geographic area in which you live as well as your health and your age.

There are limits on pre-existing condition exclusion periods that can be imposed. If you have been uninsured for more than 63 days before your individual health insurance becomes effective, you may face a 12-month pre-existing condition exclusion period. Underwriting guidelines can be different from one insurance company to another. The insurance company, if they elect to insure you, may impose an elimination rider(s). This would exclude paying benefits on any pre-existing medical condition that disclosed in this rider. Insurance laws in the State of Idaho provide for a 12 month exclusionary period limit for pre-existing conditions. Credit for prior creditable coverage is required. Premium rates vary depending upon plan type, age and gender and use of tobacco.

Newborns and adopted children are automatically included under a parent’s individual insurance policy for the first 60 days. Unmarried children under age 25 who receive more than half of their financial support from their parents can continue coverage on their parent’s policy. Medically certified handicapped dependents are allowed coverage under a parent's individual health plan with no age restrictions.

Generally if you purchase a policy that costs less in monthly premium, you will usually end up paying a greater share of the medical expenses when you are sick or hurt. Your coverage cannot be canceled because you get sick. This is called guaranteed renewability. You have this protection as long as you pay the premiums and do not defraud the company. In the case of managed care plans, you must continue to live in a managed care plan’s service area. However, your health coverage may be canceled if the insurer does not continue to offer the coverage for all policyholders.
